The Simple and Effective way to deal with Mycotoxins.
What are Mycotoxins?
Mycotoxins can occur on growing, harvested or stored cereal and forage
crops. Invisible to the naked eye, these toxic chemicals are produced
by some types of mould growth under certain environmental conditions
and can cause serious health problems for horses.
Why should I be worried?
Mycotoxins have been shown to suppress the immune system and, while
severe mycotoxin poisoning (mycotoxosis) can be fatal, moderate
exposure has been linked to hypersensitivity and allergies, poor growth
rates in young stock, reduced performance levels, liver damage and loss
of condition. Some studies have also cited mycotoxins as a possible
factor in grass sickness and colic. Certain types of mycotoxin have
been shown to have an antibiotic effect; which is undesirable, since
antibiotics knock out beneficial bacteria in the gut, resulting in
digestive disorders such as scouring or colic. Long term exposure to
mycotoxins can, therefore, prove debilitating and leave the horse
vulnerable to sickness or disease.
What's the Solution?
As Mycotoxins are odourless and horses cannot taste them in feed,
ingestion of contaminated feed or forage and inhalation are
all-important causes of exposure. The key in helping to prevent
exposure is always to put quality first and only use the best quality
feed and forage. However, even good quality forage may have a degree of
contamination; we cannot actually see whether mycotoxins are present,
there is no way to test for their presence and until now there had been
no way to tackle the problem of mycotoxins in hay or haylage for horses.
Developed in partnership with Alltech, Mycosorb Equine Formula is a
revolutionary new product designed to help protect horses from the very
real threat posed by Mycotoxins present in forage. This natural forage
additive specifically targets ingested mycotoxins, removing them from
the gut. Distributed exclusively by Happy Horse Products, Mycosorb
Equine Formula is easily applied to dry hay or forage prior to steaming
in a Happy Horse™ Hay Steamer. Mycosorb Equine Formula is then
effectively and evenly distributed throughout the hay, which ensures
even and thorough distribution throughout the volume of hay to be fed
to the horse.
